DIY Custom Planner Part 1

My custom made planner before binding.

Hi there lovely! Today I am sharing my method of making a DIY planner. I searched long and hard on different techniques so that the planner would work for everything I need it to and want to share my findings with you. One of my goals for myself is to become more organized and I am hoping that this will help! I am also making on for my daughter in hopes that it will inspire her to be more organized as well.

This DIY planner was inspired by Youtuber VasseurBeauty's video on how to make a DIY Planner. I do bind my agenda differently than her but that's mostly because i feel like mine turned out more bulky than hers. Here is a link to her video:
She has several wonderful videos about organizing yourself, DIY beauty products and just life in general. I absolutely love her page!

What you will need:
  • Regular printer paper and a printer
  • 8.5 by 11 in card stock in various colors
  • Clear contact paper (also known as clear Magic Cover)
  • Needle and thread (waxed thread is best)
  • Glue Stick
  • Scissors
  • Pen or thin marker
  • Stickers, deco tape and anything else you want to use to decorate with (I found all of the deco stuff at Hobby Lobby on sale for 50% off

I think this is my favorite part, the cover design! Go to Google and type in the search anything that you enjoy. Your favorite color, favorite movie, favorite animal, etc. Basically anything that makes you smile! And then choose the images tab. Save the ones that you like in a folder. You will need anything between 6 and 15 images, depending on your design.

Watch the following video to create your design:

And you have created your cover! Now print that bad boy out.

Now it's time to create your pages. You have 2 options here. You can search the internet for already created pages, there's thousands of them out there. Just Google Printable Agenda Pages. You can monthly pages, weekly pages and even daily pages, depending on what works best for you. Below is some examples that I found online.

Or you can make your pages on Picmonkey to make them more custom to you. Here are the ones I made for myself:

When you have your design created print out half of them amount that you need. Then pull your printed pages off the printer and load them into the paper tray of your print face up! And print the other half of what you need and now you have pages printed for your agenda! You can also choose to print these directly onto pages of cardstock if you would prefer that look. My printer decided not to cooperate and only printed the back of some pages but with this being my daughter's agenda it will just create some fun coloring or writing pages!

You can follow this same directive for any other pages you would like in your agenda. For example I made pages to budget my finances on and pages for planning out future blogs.

Now that you have all of your pages printed out, set aside your cover page. Separate your different sections of pages into stacks. Weekly, monthly, budget, blog, etc. Take 3 or 4 pages of whichever section you would like to have in the front and fold them in half and set aside. These are called signatures.

Continue this until you have no pages left in that section and then move on to the section that you want next in line. Continue until you are out of pages.

Now grab your cover sheet, card stock, scissors, pen or marker, and contact paper. Fold your cover sheet in half like so:

Now cut the page in half on the fold line. You now have a front and back.

Take your front page and your chosen color of card stock and the side of the page up with the side of the card stock. Then measure the card stock about a half of an inch wider on one side and cut it out. Below is an example:

Now, using your glue stick, glue the page to the card stock.

Do this for the back cover as well.

Now we grab our clear contact paper.

Match the bottom right corner of your cover up with the bottom right corner of the contact paper. Now I like to give a little extra room on the contact paper in case I make the sheet crooked on my cover page. That way I can just trim off the excess and it looks just as good. Mark your cut lines and cut the contact paper out. What you want to try to avoid is making any creases or bubbles in the contact paper.

Peel off one corner of the contact paper and try to match it up with the corner of the cover page. Then slowly peel the contact paper backing off while smoothing it out over the cover sheet.

Trim off any excess paper hanging over the edges. Do the same for the back cover as well. This is the finished cover after I added a little decoration to it:

You can choose to make some dividers between the sections if you like. Here are the ones that I made for my planner:

Mine are folded over and I have glued another piece of card stock on it to make little holders for coupons and such.

Decorate your pages as you see fit. Here's some of what I did:

Now your pages are all ready to go! How to bind the pages together is coming in the next blog!
